Deemed as perhaps the first one of its kind, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is a global phenomenon that turns dreams into reality. Presented every year in the heart of Czech Republic’s Carlsbad, this film festival lives up to all the hype and glory it has been showered in. Carlsbad, a town famous for its exotic spas, doubles itself as a popular tourist attraction while hosting this glorious event.

A Wide Variety of Film Presented

Created in 1946 with only seven countries as participants, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival has certainly come a long way in terms of excellence. Each film shown there is an example of grandeur, and the show itself is usually separated into a presentation of eight sections:

    • Debut of brand new feature films
    • Documentary films
    • Films that already achieved awards
    • Films containing views contrary from the norm
    • Films which represent the works of independent professionals
    • Films made from the time of socialism
    • Brief summary of local Czech movies
    • Specifically selected works which represent certain themes and genres

Most of the emphasis is put on the feature film competition, which serves as a background for many potential film-makers and superstars looking to make a name for themselves. Jam-packed with high class critics and experts, the festival also provides an educational platform for those who want to learn the tricks of the trade.

    Exclusive Awards

The most notable awards are given to the winners of the feature film festivals, motivating young talents and nurturing them for future success. Among the obvious ‘Best Director’, ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Actress’ awards and nominations, the jury can even vote and contribute to a one-of-a-kind ‘Special Jury Award’. However, the main aim is geared towards the best prize of them all, the ‘Grand Prix’, which is equal to a Crystal Globe award worth $20, 000, easily making it the most coveted.

The documentary films that are shown in the event are also awarded in categories, according to the length of their duration.

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is the perfect place to popularize relatively unknown European films. Co-created by the Ministry of Culture and taken care of by the president of the festival, Jiří Bartoška the legendary actor, this is one event that any movie crazy fan would regret not attending.
